One of the wonderful things about advertising is that each creative has his/her own process for coming up with ideas.
Mine is very unpopular.
In fact, most people I’ve worked with hate it. But, it’s how my mind works and it works fine for me.
Specifically, here’s the part they hate:
When I get or hear an idea, my mind instantly tries to find as many flaws with it as possible. I think of an idea as a ship. My goal is to poke as many holes in the ship as possible to see …

My last post was about the new Charger spots specifically, but in more general terms it was about frustration I feel sometimes when watching TV spots… especially ones that set up conditional situations “You did this, now you can have that.” I’ve seen another annoying spot polluting the flat screen lately (much worse, in my opinion, than the Charger spots)… It’s the new Dove bodywash ad. For starters, they’re taking the beautiful ‘William Tell Overture’ and adding this loopy sounding dude’s V/O with a not-quite-singing delivery, describing all the things …

The short video on the following link has to be seen. I love the style, but the creative concept and execution makes me jealous, and makes my head hurt just thinking of how the artist orchestrated the entire piece. In a good way.

I drove home tonight thinking about how I need to get better at time management.
Take this blog for instance. I turn my posts in on Monday night, and I am writing this on Monday night. San Diego just kicked a field goal to make it 23-17, (which by the time I am done writing this will have proved useless).
But I was in my car thinking about how I need to get better at managing my time, and because I have no idea how to do that, my mind jumped forward …

I’ve been cruising through lame stock photography a lot lately in furious mad dashes to make comps. In the process I had forgotten about how much I love Cooliris. Cooliris does a ton of awesome stuff but for me it particularly brings image searching to new heights. Stock photography will never look as good as it does when it has been coolirised. It’s quick, it’s awesome, it’s the future. Check it out if you haven’t already.
Now only if it could weed out the good stock photography from the bad, if …

The endless debate – “where does an idea come from?” I’ve got nothing. But I can tell you what makes for an amazing catalyst.
Let’s take four idea-hungry ad school chums and remove them from the concrete jungle of NYC. Then drop them in the bucolic setting of Derry, New Hampshire and seal them in the family “rumpus room” for all hours of the night with an acoustic guitar and a pitcher of Mojitos. I’m not saying we moved mountains that night, but by 4 AM …

So in a recent search of the internet I came across this ad from the WWF that is strikingly familiar to AT&T’s new mobile campaign that is running nation wide at the moment.
When does creative recycling become creative plagiarism?
I know that BBDO has recently been in Communication Arts recently with this campaign in the illustration annual and I am sure there are other awards attached to the campaign. Is this fair? I know things get reused a lot, but sometimes you have to call it how it is and say man …

A lot of people that have been in the ad biz for a while seem to fall into one of two camps. One: the “WHY THE FUCK DOESN’T EVERYBODY UNDERSTAND MY GENIUS??” camp, and Two: the “FUCK IT, JUST GIVE ME MY CHECK” camp. There’s one guy I work with who immediately pops into my head as a camp one veteran. He’s constantly bitching about everything, from the account people, to the creative quality of our group’s work, to the legal department, to the leadership skills of our ECD. Even …
