Generating Personal Content

20 October 2009 4 Comments

Honey BearI drove home tonight thinking about how I need to get better at time management.

Take this blog for instance. I turn my posts in on Monday night, and I am writing this on Monday night.  San Diego just kicked a field goal to make it 23-17, (which by the time I am done writing this will have proved useless).

College Rule StringBut I was in my car thinking about how I need to get better at managing my time, and because I have no idea how to do that, my mind jumped forward to the possible benefits of getting my shit together. The conclusion I came to was a reoccurring one.

Basically, I am not generating enough personal content, and freeing up some time would theoretically grant me the ability to change that.  And by personal content I mean paintings, stories, songs, podcasts, not poetry so much, but whatever your thing is.  It’s important as a creative, or just a human being to actively engage in whatever nonsense thing you have dedicated various amounts of hours and dollars. Anyone savvy enough to understand social media at it’s most basic level can leverage this content as a presence in the digital realm and potentially improve the path of their career. The potential rewards make the endeavor a win-win, and I remember this guy’s blog from last spring. His name is Brock Davis and you may have heard of him already. I’m not gonna pretend to know what you know.

Shattered BunnyHe started doing a project called Make Something Cool Every Day, and it is an entertaining sequence of ideas.

You should really scroll down that link before I continue…

I’ll wait.

You good?

Dude also happens to have some really cool shit in his professional portfolio.

And his site.

This is his latest thing making its way around the blogs I frequent. Probably because it’s creepy.

Brock Davis lets me know I need to get into the lab a little more often. Those stupid ideas while half asleep in the shower need a bigger budget, and I am prepared to schedule some more time for their production.

But for now I’m gonna wrap this shit up and watch the rest of this game.

And then do some cool-ass shit.

Kisses.

Man, I couldn’t agree more. Having a creative outlet is absolutely crucial to my well being. Just being able to get something down, whether it’s good or not, is like rain for the soul. It allows me to wash out the bad vibes, ready to fill it up with good.

Though, I’m curious to get your take on something. It seems when I am busiest, that’s when my muse whispers. Once I get un-busy, she peaces the f*#k out. Does that happen to you?

Yes actually. Some of my best ideas happen at the most inopportune times.

That SAME thing happens to me! Like… really? Now? UGH… okay.
    Hahaha!

Brock’s work is awesome… and hella inspiring.

I know both of you personally. And both of you spend a considerable portion of your waking hours under ridiculous expectations with an inherent need to out-do what you have just done. So maybe it just SEEMS like we get more ideas while being beaten by our workload, because that is our natural state of being. And since we all creatively problem solve for a living when we relax and turn our brains off, those fuckers turn OFF.
