“Eureka!”

You’ve probably already heard about Jessica Hische or seen her work. She’s super-awesome in various ways.
You should check out her site(s), follow her on Twitter, hire her as an illustrator, and just generally reward her talent with huge buckets full of money…
“Method & Craft” did an interview with her and the whole thing is a really interesting read, but part of the first paragraph specifically has been lodged in my brain since.
“I didn’t feel like I really had much to “express” yet. Being able to think and execute artwork on …

Selling Designs by the Piece. And getting Inspired.

I recently made an effort to rediscover my fun art side (to separate it from my work art side).
I was familiar with Threadless.com for the last few years, but never tried to submit a design. If you’re not familiar with the site, artists and designers submit designs which people vote on to get produced. There’s a lot of good thinking in the what’s produced and the standards are high on both design and concepts.
With the internet becoming so important for creatives, it’s good to explore these outlets. See how they …

Absolute Bullshit

Last week REVOK was arrested at LAX.
REVOK is a notorious graffiti artist who has painted all over the globe and is currently featured in the Museum of Contemporary Art’s, very successful “Art in the Streets” show.
The Los Angeles Police have been complaining about the show since before it opened and the timing/methods used to apprehend the artist implies the two things are probably linked. I’m assuming this is intended to serve as a warning to LA graffiti writers but I really don’t understand how. No kid scaling a billboard with …

Aesthetics

Visual Communications is a battle for the eye that sees countless messages a minute.
Over the last few years we’ve seen the slick, polished look. For example, Apple utilized the image reflection several years back that made it feel futuristic and modern. But it’s an aesthetic that been copied and used so much now that’s part of the noise. It doesn’t stand out.
In big cities you get to see the height of visual screaming. Neon lights. Big LED screens. Spot Lights.
On my drive in this morning I noticed a place that …

Did Comic Sans hit on Gill San’s wife?

At one point CS was the life of the party. Everyone was raving about him and wanted him to be in everything. From Christmas cards all the way to programs for a special event. This dude was rocking it for a long time in the 90s. So what happened to make Comic Sans so despised?
Some say that it was overused and worn out it’s welcome. But some people have their favorite fonts that they rotate in and out. And they are still crowd favorites. Maybe Comic Sans was just a …

Pretty Colors

Color is one of those things you can never stop learning about or experimenting with. I had an amazing teacher that beat color theory into me and as a result I have a deep appreciation for it.
You’ve probably already seen this guy’s work. It seems like he has stuff everywhere right now, and a quick glance at his site confirms that notion.

His stuff is awesome, incredible, wonderful, astonishing, staggering, spectacular, etc. But don’t just listen to my thesaurus.

DXTR

Last night I was on the phone with a good friend and we were discussing next steps in a project he is working on. I asked him to send me some screenshots of things he liked and thought would be appropriate for the subject matter. I mentioned a great place to find inspiration was Behance.net, and after typing it into my browser to send him the link I quickly scanned the front page and clicked on the first thing that caught my eye.
Which was Dudes Factory x DXTR/ “One Wish” …

Good Fucking Design Advice

Most designers/art directors need a little push once in a while. I’ve always wanted a swearing, ball busting creative director to tell me that my work sucks. I just found one…
