Everyone you know hearts NYC and wants to sleep on your air mattress

I can’t really say that I’ve ever been a particularly big fan of house guests.  Even as a child, I was more than mildly annoyed when my twin godsisters would come sleep on the floor of my room for a week when they were in town.  I was annoyed when I had to vacate my bed and sleep on the couch bed for slumber parties.  When some of my family came to stay with us last year while I was living at home, I flat out refused to give up …

Eight Cool Things I’ve Done Recently

New York City is a cool place.  That is obvious.  In any given month, there are a million different things going on.  So here is a list of eight cool events I’ve attended and things I’ve done just in April to May of 2011.  They include how much I paid to attend in case you are ever in the area or maybe if you’re just curious about how much things are in NYC.

In & Out Burgers in Suburban Paradise

There is an ever-growing suburban paradise a few miles north of Dallas known as the city of Frisco. Fifteen years ago it was a just another small farm community comfortably nestled in the middle of several other small farm communities. Next thing you know they’ve got a big ass IKEA, a big ass minor league baseball stadium, all of the most important big ass restaurant chains (for its citizens’ big ass appetites), one big ass mall, tons of brand new generic looking big ass corporate offices, and plenty of big …

Cycling in the Springtime

Spring is upon us in Minneapolis, which can only mean one thing – biking season is about to get underway. Wait, what? Biking season goes from January 1 to December 31 in the Twin Cities, you say? That’s right, suckas! Despite -40° temps and feet of snow covering this fair state, people are pushing those pedals all year-round. Since I’m always on the lookout for new advertising analogies, I began to ponder one day as I was watching some dude on a bike, going slower on his two wheels than …

Your life gone viral.

This past week I saw this video somebody made during his vacation in Brazil on a friends Facebook profile. The video was really well shot and edited for just a vacation footage – So good it could easily be used as a Brazilian tourism ad.  All shot with inexpensive tools, this video made its way into the interweb. People from all over the place started sharing and appreciating the work. (maybe Brazilian people for the most part – like me)

Let Wanderfly plan your trip

A new tool – that merges information from sites like Yelp, Expedia, Foursquare among others – came out to help you plan your next travel based on what would you like to do and how much you want to spend. Just choose where you are leaving from…where you would like to go (or let them choose a place for you) and let them build your itinerary.
Wanderfly also allows you to sync your account to Facebook and it will show you which of your friends are or have been to the …

Hearts and Mind

So I finally got my gas-masked mug into AgencySpy last week! Not exactly the ideal circumstances to be mentioned on AgencySpy, but at least it’s not because of being fired from some high-profile post, or being anonymously called-out by co-workers for being an insufferable douchebag…
This weekend was beautiful. The air was breathable, the temperatures comfortable, and Muscovites seemed to be flocking out into the streets again. On Friday night I saw a solo performance by Alexander Hacke (of Einsteurzende Neubauten) at a very cool little bar/café called Ikra- It was …

Scorched Earth

The one thing that I’ve become certain of since arriving in Moscow is this: nothing of any weight (psychic or otherwise) that happens here will do so without an equally baffling 180-degree reaction. It’s as if the best & the worst of nature and humanity are in some bizarre eternal battle with each other inside the city. So it’s actually NOT ironic at all that I would have written last week’s post about the ‘beauty of humanity’ at the Afisha picnic, and now, exactly 1 week later, the entire city …

Hot children in the city

I saw a side of Moscow that I loved this weekend. After a few weeks filled with drunken racists, bumbling, thuggy policemen, outrageous prices, horrible air quality, record breaking heat, and crazy working hours, I had my most enjoyable experience in Moscow so far, Saturday at the Afisha picnic. Afisha is a local magazine that’s like Moscow’s version of ‘Time Out’ or a free weekly magazine. They do this huge ‘picnic’ every year, and supposedly it’s always a big deal. I went with a few friends from work, and apart …

The riddle inside the enigma.

I’ve just finished up my third full week here in Moscow, and I’ve already witnessed more insane shit in approximately 21 days here than in a year of living in Detroit. Just a few things I’ve seen so far include a shop underneath one Metro station where you can buy automatic weapons- I saw an AK-47, some Uzi’s, a mini rocket launcher (at least that’s what it looked like)… a cash-and-carry insurgent one-stop shop! They should do a radio spot: “Need to overthrow a country whose name ends in stan?….”
There’s …
