Last weekend, a friend of mine and I attempted to bike from Minneapolis to Duluth. It’s a distance of 163 miles and the longest bike ride I had done previously was a 20-miler, and that was four years prior. Read last week’s post for some fun details, but this week, we’ll cover what I learned from said experience.

#1 – Be prepared. It’s good to be optimistic and even a bit spontaneous, but it’s better to know what the hell you’re getting yourself into.
#2 – Sometimes, you have to muscle your ...

When I was in ad school, people told me that I needed to learn all the programs (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Final Cut Pro, Flash, Dreamweaver, Action Script, etc.) So whatever I didn’t learn in class I taught myself with online tutorials and many Youtube videos. I can say I learn something new in a program just about everyday. I can also say that I am very comfortable using InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. I know bits and pieces of Final Cut Pro and Dreamweaver. But as far as coding and Flash, ...

Extreme sports has changed at a technology rate. Last years big trick is obsolete the next year.
I guess all sports have evolved. NFL players have gotten stronger and faster, hitting hard enough to make a pancreas dislodge. Baseball pitchers are throwing faster and hitters are sending them farther into the upper decks.

It’s competition that pushes these athletes to keep improving. Although, multi-million dollar contracts don’t hurt either.
But none of the major sports have evolved at the rate extreme sports has.
Maybe because it’s relatively new. I’ve seen Mixed Martial Arts evolve ...

A few months ago, I wrote a blog post about why regular old books are better than e-books. I even made a snide comment about Borders’ e-book reader, which they released haphazardly in March of this year. I don’t want to believe that this remark and the fact that I returned two books to Borders so that I could have enough money for food is what ran the company into the ground. It probably had to do with some other stuff, too. But I still feel sort of bad about ...

I went on a little bike ride this weekend with a friend of mine named Reuben. The plan was to bike from Minneapolis to North Branch, which is about 50 miles away. The next morning, we’d trek another 113 miles and make it to Duluth by nightfall where his wife, who was already there visiting family, would pick us up and drive us home. The furthest I’d ever biked before this was 20 miles and that was one time four years ago. But I wasn’t scared. Why? Because we had ...

Wading through my millions of unopened emails the other day, I noticed a “Change of Services” email from Netflix. I usually just delete those emails or let them fall to the second page and forget about them, but for some reason I opened it this time. I was startled and surprised to read the message it contained –prices were increasing by 60% starting in September. Lame.

The next day, I read an article about it on Reuters.com (“Netflix Price Raise Draws User Ire, Investor Glee”) and the Netflix spokesperson basically said ...

A big, well known brand recently produced a couple spots spoofing, or leveraging their competitors work for their own concept. In essence going after the big dog in the category. Even if done well, I think this strategy can have more negative than positive effects.
Many years ago I did a body building contest on a dare. Before going out on stage for the side by side part of the competition an experienced friend told me, “People will come pose next to you to show how they stack up to you. ...

This year, I was fortunate enough to attend the notorious Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island. I showed up, along with 40,000 other people, to witness the often-fellatial (yes, I just coined a new word) and sometimes-nauseating drama unfold as nationally-ranked contestants consumed as many hot dogs and buns (an important detail) as possible in ten minutes. I can tell you that, after standing in the crowd myself, people are really into this. And it’s all kinds of people too: meatheads, old ladies, ...
